Corrupted data on my external drive...

I just bought an external enclosure (about 1 week ago). Just today I went to access a app on it and it said that the application is corrupt and to run "chkdsk". I tried to delete the corrupt file, but it won't let me; saying that the file is unreadable/corrupt. Now (1) is there any way to remove this file? (2) Any way to restore it (not that I care, since I can just reinstall it). (3) Does this happen often on external drives?

I think I know how it got corrupted. I had my drive hooked up via a E-SATA cable, but then all of a sudden the drive shut down. I believe that the E-SATA hook up went. I don't feel like hassling to get a new one, so I am just using the USB method. I think that this is when the data got ruined. Would you suggest backing up my external drive on another drive, or on my main internal drive. I have a 80 GB internal drive (55.5 GB free) and a 232 GB external drive (200 GB free). I could always get another internal drive (probably 120 - 160 GB range).

What do you guys suggest.

Thanks

Any one have any thoughts?

How about data-backup? What is the easiest method of backing up data? What about the most cost effective? I was thinking of getting a third hard drive to back up my second hard drive (the external one) on (the first one I use soley for the OS and other apps). Although this is could be rather pricy. What about re-writtable DVDs? I know that I might never encounter this again, but the value of my data is more than enough to outweigh the risk.

Any ideas or thoughts (on either the data-backup or corruption)?
