Corsair TX850W - making bit of whining noise

I´ve bought this psu to replace the one in my sig, which ive put in my other pc. I did have this corsair psu in my other computer for a couple of weeks, with no problems, but now its in my gaming rig (sig), when i run prime it makes a bit of a whine. Should i be worried?

It will be coil whine, either caused by the coil itself or a dodgy capacitor. Contact Corsair, if it is still under the 5 Year warranty and you haven't voided it, they should repair/replace it, just start up the RMA process

If it is not under warranty, take the lid off the unit, try to identify what is causing the whine. If it is coil, some hot wax/glue should stop it, if it is capacitor, replacing it should fix it

Its brand new, but where i live its very difficult to RMA. Corsair will refuse to pay shipping costs and customs here will want upto 50% of want the thing is worth, when coming back. Ive tried before with other companies.

Unfortunately, it is just one of those things, you got unlucky and got a "faulty" component. If you can put up with the noise, it shouldn't do any harm, however if it is coil whine due to a capacitor, it is possible, and almost probable, that the capacitor can blow, which would mean a possible full PSU/system failure.

If it is brand new, is there no way you can get it sent off to the shop you bought it off for a replacement? Do they not offer a returns policy?

I get parts at trade, when really i shouldnt and i really dont want to attract attention to myself, so i will have to take it to get repaired. It now make two buzzes when starting 3dmark, but not during, sound fine while doing the benchmark. Strange it was ok in the other computer, its nearly as demanding as this one.

I think you'll find that whine is going to be from the fan - fan shroud. More of the fan design. It's quiet but gets louder under bigger loads when it spins up. Like the prime you ran. But you could certainly check it out to make sure that's the only whine.

im going to try and RMA it. If not get it fixed, its definitley not the fan and I think its get worse. I thought corsair were supposed to be the best, i know no matter how good some will fail, but from what i can see without opening it doesnt look that good. Comparing it to my thermaltake, it doesnt look anywhere near as good. The corsair has white blobs of glue, where the thermaltake has a cool looking orange fibre over its coils. The thermaltake has a much better paint job and overall is more aesthetically pleasing. It is also much heavier that the corsair, I think because it has more heatsinks and some stuff to direct the airflow. Im not saying the corsair is bad, it just seems not to have been built aswell as the thermaltake and im a bit disappointed. I love their memory, it helped me OC a lot, but I wont be buying another corsair PSU.

You shouldn't base your buying preference on 1 experience, as you say, no matter how good, failure can always happen. Also, don't go just on looks, looking through the fan grill/the back of the unit, you can't see a whole lot really, at least not in detail. You can't really see the specific components or the quality.

The weight of a unit is the general guideline, not a definite way of seeing if a unit is higher quality. I can assure you that the TX850W is a better unit than any thermaltake unit, no matter what the paint job or weight is like. Let me put it to you like this - If the 2 units stay at the same temperature, but the Tt unit needs larger heatsinks to achieve this (more weight), then you are talking less efficiency, so most probably lower quality parts.

Function over form, a lot of Antec units look like normal OEM power supplies, but you could go and get a very cheap unit with more money spent of painting the thing than on the unit itself, it doesn't make it any better just because it looks better.

I wouldn't write them off so quickly is what I'm saying, Corsair sell some excellent units

Coil whine is just one of those things that happpen, when the windings of the coils resonate at frequencies that the human ear can hear. Its harmless, and any manufacturer you buy from will have a chance of it happening.

i know, i won't write them off just because i've had one problem with them, its just the thermaltake gives the impression that it is better made. It was the coils that did if for me. The corsair looked messy with the bits of glue and the thermaltake looked cool with the orange sleeves, its like your lawyer turning up dressed like a bum vs a clean cut guy in a smart suit, who do you want fighting your case?
