counter strik source BIG problem

i have just bought a new laptop, and have recently put steam etc. on it. i installed counter strik source and waited patiently while game fles were updated.
after around 2 hrs of updating i finally opened counter strike source, it got as far as the loading menu (picture of 2 cts one with an m4, with a small black box in the bottom corner saying "loading...") after it has been on this screen for a few seconds it then comes up with a blue screen (of death) with writing from top to bottom, i cannot however give you any info about what it says as it then restarts itself. any help as to how i can fix this would be much appreciated, i have tried steam support but when i use the filters it still gives me to many results to view
this also happens with hafl life 2 and i havent tried to check if it happens with any other games, i think it might be something to do with the automatic updates, and i might try reinstalling steam and so on, but if anyone can give any more info i would be grateful. also when it reboots, it checks drive c: and this takes ages (this is still in a blue screen) and then after abt 5 mins it comesonto the logon screen.
cheers
(my laptop plays far cry and call of duty 2 fine, although i havent tried to connect either of them to multiplayer games online)

When the drive is being checked after a bad shutdown like the ones you are seeing that's part of Windows doing that with Check Disk or simpy spelled "chkdsk" which replaced scandisk seen in the 9X-ME OSs. You can either press any key right away to stop that and continue booting or even disable that feature. If you disable that and later need to scan the drive you simply enter chkdsk at the command prompt found in accessories.

Source games are "system pounders" as the expression goes. Since that requires internet connection to run for the most part along with the updated more intense graphics you need a good card and plenty of memory to enjoy it. Here it would be a help if you provided some system information to help you resolve this.

its a laptop with 1gb of RAM a nVIDIA 7300 256mb 1.8ghz turion cpu and 100gb hdd 5400rpm, i have a 2.27mbps internet connection and i think thats it

While sometimes their servers can be a royal nuisance with ads at times the first thing you may want to do before anything is make certain you have updated both video and sound drivers. Source is picky if those are not installed. Although laptops will not be the best for gaming especially for those where you connect to their servers first the hardware you have should be running both Counter Strike and HL2 for the first month at least without issues. You may have had a bad install of the Source engine where something is missing. Or you may have to change settings for connecting to Steam.
