tryin to be cheap and still make myself a new computer...this is literally...THE FIRST TIME i have ever put anything like this together...so look at these two...one from newegg stuff and one from my local microcenter...

are EITHER of them okay? trying to play some games...but not ridiculously demanding games...i want to have Direct X10 in case something comes out that sparks my interest...

is there ANYTHING good about these? lol...like i said...ridiculously new to putting these things together...hit me with some criticism...

im a big guy, i can take it...;) and try to be REALLY specific/detailed so i can understand what your talkin about...!!

the newegg seems nice i would just upgrade your psu
450 watts is a little tight for your build. same goes for the micro-center pc.

for the microcenter, the 8500 is a pretty big performance compared to the 8600 in games. i would strongly suggest taking the 8600 like with the newegg.
and the mobo and cpu aren't compatible. you've got an intel mobo with a amd cpu.
and unless you're gonna get a tiny little case i wouldn't take an uatx mobo.
take a matx or atx (those are bigger and more common)

why did you choose for amd btw?

no idea...which is preferred? amd or intel...? just started throwing things together!

and oops with incompatability....didnt realize it...heh

the microcenter site was a little trickier to figure things out than newegg...didnt even realize i was getting a tiny motherboard !!!! ;)

i'll configure a nice build for you

i used the same case, memory and psu coz you already had them or wanted to pick them up locally.

cpu: Intel Pentium E2140 74.99
mobo: ASUS P5N-E SLI 114.99
ram: Kingston 4GB (2gb x 2) (already have)
gpu: XFX PVT84JYAJG GeForce 8600GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card - Retail - 100.00
PSU - 450Watts (already have)
Tower - wanna pick this up locally so i dont have to pay shipping...
Hard Drive - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM - 53.00
Disc Drive - LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R - 28.00

Vista Home Premium 64-bit - 112.00

and that will be able to handle the majority of games coming out? or ones that already are out?

any really weak parts?

and what are the differences between the versions of vista? i know i want the 64 bit system...but like...home premium/ultimate...so on and so forth

The different Vistas just have more applications within the OS. Vista Home Premium 64 is fine.

Intel is the preffered and IMO the better CPU manufacteror.

What are you doing with this computer and what is your budget?

well..i want to be ABLE to play games...but its not going to be like...a gaming machine...or anything like that...

i mean, i still play games like starcraft and diablo ;) i played some DOD:S but the comp i have right now cant play em. i also want to be able to play hellgate london...with NO PROBLEMS...and be able to play starcraft II when it comes out...no problem...

budget...as cheap as possible...

You'll be able to play hellgate london at least on low-medium with an 8600gt, I recommend going up to a 8800gt or 3850 if you want to play it on high.

really? i had some 256mb graphics card in before, and was dominating hellgate...will a 512 card really have a hard time with it?

about the processor, amd vs intel, right now i would say that intel is ahead, but it has been back and forth for as long as they have been around.

it's not all about the size of memory.
the speed of the memory is also very important.
you als have the gpu speed, gpu type and lots of other things to worry about.

anyways this build should be able to play the majority of the games at medium or low settings.
the weakest part of the setup would probably be the psu.
You're taking it to the edge right now.
If you have the money i would spend it on at least 600 watt psu and a 8800gt.

AMD may one day catch up and lead, but for right now, and most likely for a long time, Intel will stay in the lead. The breakthrough of the C2D's helped lots with them.

is the intel core 2 duo THAT MUCH better than the AMD ?

im tryin to keep my budget at a MINIMUM...and the AMD is a lot cheaper....
