I have come across a better CPU, mobo combo than the one I am currently using and want to couple it with my old hard drive, operating system and all. Any suggestions on the best way to accomplish this

I think i understand, you want to upgrade your Mobo and CPU with your old HDD and want to know if it will work? well if thats what your asking your probly going to have to install windows again..but the HDD and other old devices should work, the only thing that might give you trouble is the ram.

wtf............ very fragmenteddd sentenceee. LOL. yea it will work, thats wat im doin. upgradin my p3. with a sempron with new mobo and memory. usin the same hardware tho too. so we got the same problem. my answer: yes it will work, but like format ur C drive so u can start over again. its better that way

well, if you're using xp it won't let you change the system configuration without doing a clean install. every time you boot up the pc verifies the DMI pool data. If something major changes, like say the mobo and proc. then windows won't boot. windows ME doesnt do this though so you'd be fine with that and any earlier versions of windows.

I tried to keep it short and simple, I will elaborate even though the question appears to have been answered,
I want to upgrade my mobo and cpu and keep my existing operating system and all data on my existing hard drive. I was asking if this was possible to do without doing a clean install but it appears that I will have to re-format/ reinstall and lose all the data...so be it!
I was hoping ,but in reality I knew it would come to that:(

Changing something as vital as a motherboard can cause a driver mess affecting stability as well as performance. So yes back up your data onto a cd/dvd, other disk or partion and do a clean install.

Thanks for all the input. I was just looking for a "softer, easier way", the story of my life:) I always tend to miss something when backing up data, usually belongs to the wife...not good:0

Well you can do that but do be aware that in some cases, you will need to reinstall the OS before you can access the data

It will work in your specific case. It wont always work.

Unfortunately that's not entirely true either (thus eliminating any stable answer) ... sometimes you can get away with it sometimes you cant (more often not however)

Well its worth a check...
