CPU at 100%

My cpu is running at 100% just searching the web. This doesn't happen all the time but it's slowing things down, obviously. I have an Athlon XP 2000. Anything I can do to get this thing to work better?

look what process it is that is using all your cpu, you can see this by looking in processes tab of the task managaer (crtl - alt - del)

My CPU used to od that 100% most of the time, anad it would go down a little if i wasn't using much if it, Can you press ctrl alt delte and the task manager pops up?

I had a virus that made it do that.

Sounds like a case of severe spyware adware hoggin resources, try cleaniong up a bit, if that doesnt work then format and reinstall windows. ;)

Also depending on what Windows you have go to start run then type in msconfig

and you can stop allot of things from starting up that you dont want that might be taking up your cpu

that only works good if you have something like ad-watch, which locks startup selections. If you deselect some (like AIM or MSNMSGR), they load up again on startup.

cyras21,
do like apj said. once taskmanager is open goto the processes tab and click the CPU heading 2 times, (that will put the processes that are using up your CPU time at the top). List the top 5 processes and approx how much % they are using. :)

I had a problem with a computer that had a bunch of registry entries that went nowhere and the computer kept trying to start them up, bogging down the system... Try getting a registry cleaner, and hopefully that should clear up some of the issues...

Im having the same problems too, I ran a check for spybot s&d, and microsoft anti spyware both in normal mode and safe mode and its all clean

With no programs running or even when programs are running, My svchost.exe is always around 90-99% making my CPU at 100%

Help! Plz

hmmm, that process for me is running at 0% usage. Use norton or something and check if you have viruses. If you dont, then it has to be some kind of option that you changed somewhere.
