CPU auto shut down after 5secs

Yeah, I built a new computer today, asus M2N mobo, 4600+ X2 AM2, 2gigs dual-channel ram OCZ all plugged into a 600 watt PSU.
But for some reason it will only boot for about 5 secs, I don't get anything on the screen, just a click from the drives, from them powering up and then the comp shuts itself down. I know its not the PSU, because it came from a working system. I tried it without the video card, DVD drive and HDD, still no real boot.
I haven't yet reset the cmos, as it is a open-box mobo from newegg I will try that next.
Any input?

it sounds like its overheating

Ditto. Are you sure the CPU heatsink is making contact with the CPU? Even if it's off by a millimeter or two, you risk overheating. Pull out the MoBo and make sure the heatsink isn't getting caught up on a resistor next to the socket. Sometimes space is a bit tight depending on the heatsink and you have to improvise a bit.

A surefire way to tell is by looking at the POST screen when you turn it on. If it's able to load to a certain point, you'll see a message that says 'System Is overheated, Pres <key> to continue." or something to that degree. Won't always stay on until it gets that far though - CPU's heat up quick!

I'll try re-seating the heatsink
And I just cleared the CMOS, no dice

Ok. If you can turn your heatsink, then try it. Sometimes they should be placed a certain way. For example, my Masscool is square on the bottom with a square rim around it, but one side is slightly off-center (by about 3 mm) when compared to the others, so I used that to take advantage of how I placed it.

Yes, it has thermal grease (arctic silver) and the heat sink is so big it only goes one way, asper the instructions, so I'm gonna use the heat sink that came with the CPU, rather then the big Coolermaster.

I had to take my heatsink apart and turn some stuff so it would fit. If you're confident with that or if your HSF allows it, then give it a shot. If not, yeah try the stock HSF.

Was that the problem? Not making full contact with the CPU? Don't give up on the after market fan yet. Like I said, it just might have gotten the 'random capacitor hangup' that happens sometimes.

Well I re-seated the HS and even rotated it to face it the other direction, same result. I guess I'll be trying the stock HS after dinner.

You did get all the stand offs under the board in the right places and plugged in the 4 pin CPU power connector

The aftermarket is a Coolermaster GeminII.
I did get the 4-pin connector...Standoffs? The mobo raisers? If so, thesn yes, I have all six in and they are screwed down.

I have tried single stick, in different RAM slots. I have some DDR 400 that I can try.

lol, except I'm an idiot and my mobo does not have any DDR 1 slots....

With a Open Box part its hard to tell, the guy could have got it decided he didnt want it or it could have been dropped down a flight of stairs. You could take it out of the case but it on a box hook everything up one piece at a time and trouble shoot it. If all else fails send it back for a exchange

Yeah, I may just bite the bullet and pay for a new mobo. But I'm gonna try the stock HSF, since that is pretty much the only thing I have left that I can try.

EDIT: Well I am happy (sorta) to report that the root fo the problem was infact the Coolermaster HS, I installed the Stock HSF and all is well. Thaks to everyone who helped me with this problem.
