Cpu chip schematics

I didnt know exactly where to post this but I was wondering what a cpu or gpu chip looks like on the inside under the black top. Is it just a really really thin layer comprised of microscopic transistors?

it looks a lot like this:

if you wanna see what it looks like yourself, buy an old celeron off ebay for cheap(with no integrated heat spreader) then rub off the black layer with coarse sandpaper
