Hey guys/gals,

I know the question "Intel vs AMP" is like asking "Apple vs PC", but i was wanting to get your opinions.

So right now i am running an outdated Intel Q6600 OC to 3.5GHZ. I am in the market to upgrade to not only a new CPU, but Motherboard and RAM.

This is what i got so far (don't think it really matters, but I'll include):
Power supply: 850W Corsair TX
Graphics card : GTX 660Ti

So some tasks that i want my processor to do on almost regular basis would be:
Video encoding/Rendering
regular word processing and such
Internet browsing
Most importantly, lots of multitasking.

Ask any questions you want, and please suggest away. Please leave a reason why you chose what you did.

Thanks

This is an intel forum, so you have to say Get an i5/i7.

Personally though, I have to ask, how much do you have to spend? IF you are on say a $500 budget, get an AMD. If you have say $2000 to spend, then a 6 core intel or the highway.

If you can afford it, go Intel. If you're on more of a budget I also recommend AMD.

I don't mean that literally. Just seems like around here that everyone is intel crazy, when for the average user the power of an intel is useless.

On that budget, look at either an i3 or a FX6300. AMD will give slightly better multithreaded performance, while the intel will do more on single threaded.

So even with a $600 budget, an i3 is all i can get? wow...

Depends on what else you put in there. It is all about budgeting. If you want a decent GPU, you are going to need a i3 or AMD. If you want a great processor, but could care less about graphics, then go i5/HD4000 or FX83*0/GT630 (or HD7750).

With that video card you have why look at CPUs with intergrated graphics?

Unless you can crossfire with it, that I don't know much about but get a strong CPU and let the video card do the graphics.

Because you will not find an Intel CPU, aside from the 2550 that does not have integrated graphics. AMD does not have graphics on any of their CPUs, aside from the A series. The chipsets for the FX series does not have graphics either.

Simply put, you really don't have a choice. You either have integrated, which won't matter with a dedicated GPU anyway, or you don't. It does ont affect system performance at all.

Ok ok ... maybe you guys are misunderstanding. My budget is $600 (around anyway) for the CPU ONLY... CPU ... that's it....

For that price i would probably go for a server motherboard with dual sockets and 2 4 core 8 thread processors, will update links in a second.

But i must say this is a waste if you arent doing heavy en/decoding for work really, a single 220 buck i5 is mare than enough for anything really

Would that be better than any AMD around that price?

Depends on how you mean. You will not find a consumer AMD processor in that range.

If you mean just any AMD in the same range, then the 3930k is a low end chip for high end money, as your looking at 12 core server chips on the AMD side for the 600 price range.

But really, you are wasting money on both cases. Just grab a 3770k and you will be fine. Above that, your tossing hundreds at diminishing returns.

I'm just looking for the best bang for my dollar for the tasks that i will be doing. It's gotta be overclockable as well.

Bang for the buck is hard to determine. Most say that intel is decent at that. Personally, I don't think you will notice the difference. I sure don't. Aside from the newer games (anything DX10 or above), I rarely feel a difference between an i7 and my t7200.

That aside, like said. You will not get better without wasting money than a 3770k or a 3820. The 3820 is plenty overclockable, as is the 3770 and 3570. You don't have to use a k series to overclock. There are plenty of partially unlocked processors from intel, which will overclock to a certain point. The 3770 and 3570 will do 40 (4GHz) without issue. The 3820 will do 42 and generally 120 Bclk, putting you in the range of 5GHz.

Guess what I am saying is get a 3770(k) or a 3820.
