CPU fan connector

My current MOBO is an asus p5wd2. I just went to install a new thermaltake cpu cooler on to the cpu and I'm not sure as where to plug it in. The fan is a 3 pin connector but the cpu fan pins on the mobo is made for 4. Do I just put the 3 on the 4 pin connector or do I put it on a different fan spot?

Also, I'm getting a blue screen directly after I load into windows. Could this be related?
 
It sounds like that model cooler was intended for Socket A or older Intel models where the boards then used a three pin connector. If it only has three openings for pins it wouldn't be advised since you are working with 12v. A cross to ground with the wrong pins? :eek: !!! That's the problem when buying 3rd party accessories before matching things like that up.
 
As long as the wires/pins match up, I don't see why it wouldn't work... I mean basically every fan runs off of a 12v line. The other two connections are RPM and ground. I don't know the pinout of the 4 pin connection, but if that's stated on intel's site, it should work just fine.

If all else fails, you could just clip the wires and stick them directly into a 12v Molex connection. You couldn't control the fan, but it'd work :P
 
You can try finding a variable resistor like Zalman's Fan Mate which basically controls how much voltage goes into the fan.

The first thing to remember is that 12v feed. You still have to know which is the live 12v feed when plugging the 3pin on a 4 or 4pin on the three. The odd part about that board is the lack of a 3pin location on the board itself. On the Asus A8N SLI model here the Zalman CNPS9500 went right on and plugged into the cpu fan connector. That and the case fan location right next to it are 3pin not 4pin there with the slide lock tab. Look over the diagram in the user's manual. The link you posted is for an Intel not Asus board.

That's why I mentioned getting the correct model cooler for type of cpu it was going on. AMD boards see the 3 pin while Intel sees the 4 pin. The model cooler is simply wrong for that board. I look at Antec and other case fans to often see the 3 pin plugs on those. But Intel requires the extra pin for the cpu fan.

What happened there was a choice of cooler model without looking to which socket type or connector was on it. Where did you get the cooler from? an online vendor or retail store? The cpu and case fan plugins on the Asus A8N SLI board are 3 pin plugons there. Others on the board are probably 4 pin as well. The Intel model Asus boards do have the 4 pin for the cpu. You have the wrong model cooler intended for a Socket A, 754, or 939 board not an Intel 775 model. You simply bought the wrong cooler.
