cpu fan failure

my comp is a little bit loud, so im trying to remove/move a fan or two for noise reduction. i have 2x80mm and 1x120 plugged into the mobo for readings, in addition to my cpu fan.
unfortunately, when removing one of the 80mm fans, something goes wrong. after removing the fan, i turn on the comp, and during load i get an error stating "cpu fan fail or speed too low". but, when i plug the 80mm case fan back in, everything is fine again. what could be wrong?

fyi, i do have the cpu fan plugged into the mobo with the connection directly next to it.

There are generally two points on the board for case fan as well as cpu fan. You probably reversed the plugs. Look at the board or in the user manual's board diagram to verify the right locations for those. They both are white with the three or four pins and look identical.
