my CPU fan is running at unsually high speeds for simple tasks.when my fan is working at 100% all the time it causes my P.C to run alot slower and creating alot of noise. i measured the temperature of my CPU and it was around 70 degrees celcius, sometimes it becomes hotter but sometimes its slightly cooler.
heres the spec of my P.C -

Advent T9402
Windows XP home edition
Intel pentium 4 HT processor 570 3.8GHz
500GB hardrive (2x 250GB)
just over a GB of ram
ATI 256mb graphics card

does anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this ?

Indeed. There was a similar problem like this on a friends graphics card, all the fix was is to blow out all of the crap that was clogging the heatsync on it. Although if it continues then I'd be a little worried because thats quite a high temp to be running at for that model processor.

What heatsync are you using? How old is it?

i measured the temperature of my CPU and it was around 70 degrees celcius,
that is meltdown territory, is the system stock cooling. May need to consider and upgrade... quick

Yeah that's exactly what I thought. Might be time to purchase a better heatsync and thermal paste. Is that the temp when under heavy stress or when idle? Whats the room temp like?

the room temp is only about 20-25 celcius at the most.

when idle the temp is about 60 celcius
when i'm actually using it runs anywhere between 70-75 celcius

so just blowing out the dust on the fan and giving it a clean just fix it ?

thanks for your help so far

I take it that it was the dust and other crap gathered up within your heatsync that was causing the problem then? If you would have ran it at that temp for any longer without having cleaned it (which would most likely make the temp go higher), you would have seen a square shaped hole in your motherboard where your processor once sat.

Well, my CPU idles at 65 C, and load is 82 C, never had any problems. I didnt however take it apart yesterday and there was dust caked on the HSF, so that should bring temps down by a bunch.

lol and to think, I get worried if my CPU hits 65C under heavy loads on hot days, if it were to idle at that on average I'd be dying. They're really high temps for processors to be running at, I'm amazed your processors havent created a new square hole in the floor of your room.

my computer now idles at around 53-56 degrees celcius and under heavy load around 60 degrees celcius.

P.S the CPU fan is now running very smooth and very very quite, it only runs at around 400RPM and in heavy load around 3500RPM but when it was over heating it was running at around 4500RPM when idle !!!!! i never checked it under heavy load, i was too scared to :)

Lol wow, I don't like it if my cpu even touches anything higher than 55c:eek:

Agreed. And that's when it's under stress too. My processor barely hit's over 47C when under extreme usage and on a hot day. I'd still be a little worried about those temperatures if I were you. Check google and try to find anyone else with the same processor as you and see what the recommended temps for that processor are.

I havn't done enough overclocking to my cpu,but it is constantly between 32 degrees C and 34 degrees C.I wouldn't let this go over 45 lol.
