cpu for rendering 3d model stuff

yea well i would like some info on which CPU would be the best for rendering 3d modelling video(not sure what its exactly called). Rendering stuff with like 3ds max , mental ray, etc... budget for the cpu would be around 500 dollars. I have a amd athlon xp 2600+ atm and it takes like 16 minute just to render 4 seconds of a high poly fish animation using a advanced ice/water effect shader. obviously i will need to render longer clips, so im going to get a new comp. I remember the old saying of pantium for video etiding and stuff like that, and amd for gaming, but with dual core and this new era of CPUs, im at a loss of which to choose. any info is appreciated, ty for ur time.

He's talking about rendering animations which basically involves very complicated calculations. If you have 500$ as a budget you could use a thing called network rendering. They have atleast a couple of those for MAYA and probably for 3D Studio Max too. Oh and did you know that your 4 seconds of animation so far is 96 frames? One second of animation contains 24 frames. For a PIXAR animation rendering one frame can take up to 90 hours. So basically get a good as possible dual core processor and make sure you have atleast 1Gb of ram.

well its 120 frames for the thing i rendered. so like a amd dual core and 2 gb ram? or would it be better to get 4gb of ram? and yea i know i wont be able to get pixar animations to render fast :) And what is this network rendering u speak of?

Network rendering is a thing that a couple of companies provide, costs money though. This one company had 6 AMD Athlon XP 2400+'s and 40 AMD Athlon XP 2600+'s for people to use to render via internet. It was actually quite cheap. Like a couple of dollars an hour. But by the number of CPU's rendering it won't take many hours.

I am about to make the same purchase for a modelling project I'm undertaking ... and I think for what you're looking for, an Athlon64 X2 might be the best option as far ... from what I've seen the Pentium D only really outpaces the Athlon64 X2 when you have a monstrous number of threads fired up across numerous applications (quite possibly a sidebenifit of a longer pipeline I dont know)

Not always. For starters, industry standard says its 23.976fps (which is distinct from another standard of 24fps) ... and secondly, you can render at whatever hz you want :)

yea i rendered at 30 FPS

alright coo thx for the responses

im looking between these 2:

I would OC them anyways, so would it be worth the extra $100 for that 200 mhz more if i will OC em anyways? My main concern though is the cores, the 3800 one doesnt say which core it is.

Would anyone mind showing me a good mobo to go with this, i dont want to spend to much, but i dont want a pos either. dont know much on mobo brands and shit

Well the 24 frames per second is used alot, the animation "looks smooth" and keeps the framecount low.

The 4200 is a far better OCer than the 3800 or so it seems (i only had a 4200 for a few hours before i sold it so i never got a chance to test that out myself) but the 3800 i run now cant OC all that much

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum for $130 ... balanced out with an awesome featureset and good OC ability (not to mention its a no-fuss board)

So is 23.976, 25, 29.97, 30 and the "doubles" of all of those...
