CPU, HSF and Thermal Paste

So, i bought a stock HSF and some IC7 paste before. that combination worked great until my mobo fried. The IC7 was good but i heard that AS-5 is better, so i bought some. The tube arrived damaged and unusable, and no offer for a refund or replacement. Crappy service, so negative feedback left.

Now I have bought a Zalman CNPS700C-ALCU Cooler, Some more IC7 and a new processor: C2D E4500. I believe this is a good combination. But because the AS-5 came damaged i havent bought any more. What would my temps be like with the AS-5 rather than IC7?
 
AS5 is pretty good but MX-2 is my favorite and just as good if not better then AS5 with one of these you might see temps anywhere from 5-10C better depending on how well you put it on.
 
Which method is best, for any sort of thermal paste?

Big blob in the middle?
Spreading it with a credit card?
9 small dots method?

I can't find any MX-2 on Ebay, i'll have another look.

That all really depends on the HSF and thermal past you use with the zalman I usually do the blob in the middle with MX-2.
 
a small blob on the center of the hsf/cpu. When you press the heatsink down onthe cpu it squishes the blob of paste really flat and spreads it out alot. If you put too much paste on it can spread out beyond the edges of the cpu and possibly down into the socket area and cause problems. What I do is put a little paste on and then press the heatsink down, then check to see how much the paste has spread out and if its covered roughly 75% of the top of the cpu then I consider that good.
 
Thanks, I'm now waiting for my motherboard to re-arrive, apparently it wasn't dead when they tested it. Which is why i bought a new CPU, I'm trying to eliminate the culprit...
