CPU/Motherboard Compatibility

I'm looking at upgrading a processor, and was wondering, how do you know if a processor is compatible with a motherboard? Does it just have to be the same socket? (Socket 478) Or is there more to it?

Thanks,
James

1. Same socket
2. The motherboard has to support that core and on older motherboards, also has to support the clock speed.

Well for instance, a socket 478 Pentium4 comes in several flavours:
- NorthwoodA (P4A)
- NorthwoodB (P4B)
- NorthwoodC (P4C)
- Prescott (P4E)
Generally speaking the only two that you should be considering are the P4C and the P4E. In light of that, not all Socket478 motherboards that support a P4C processor will support a P4E processor. In general if you buy a non-super-cheap motherboard that has a 800MHz BUS then you should be fine (unfortunately there are many exceptions)

i think the motherboard i have now is an Intel D845GVSR, right now it has a Celeron 2.4 in there, i think i could replace it with a P4 2.4, but im not sure, does anyone know for sure?

Pretty sure the celeron is the newer Celeron D 2.4 GHz, which i beleive is prescot.

So what I need is a Socket 487 P4 running on the prescott core ... right? and thats it thats all such as the

the Pentium® 4 2.4GHz CPU PROCESSOR - Socket 478 - 533MHz Bus - Prescott 1MB Cache Socket 478 - OEM

i found the intel specs here, and thats what i got out of it... if im right, please tell me

On a slightly different note, would be able to use this card with that motherboard? or does it have to be non-express PCI? is there a diff between cards that say PCI and PCI-E? any help is appreciated
