CPU not too sure

Ok since i've upgraded my CPU i've noticed that my performance on winXP decreased (ok i haven't reformatted yet)
As mentioned earlier in my other thread my PC shut down when setting up vista instead of rebooting.
Now i booted Pclinux 2007 and i got this

so i checked my Bios and i reads the following

is the temp too high or maybe just a problem with the CPU cause ive never got this with my celeron !!!

edit : ive never actually looked at my temps ever since i bought my PC :D, so am not too sure !!

Yes that temp is too high. I'd say the heatsink isn't working right, it's probably not making full contact with the CPU. I think the heatsink because 87 isn't a temperature normally reported by a faulty sensor.

ok cromewell thanks, am a go oofline now and fix the heatsink then am a check back the temp and report back

cheers

hey Cromewell, the heatsink seems ok, i removed it and tightened it up a bit,
I booted into windows and as the startup items were loading, bam, shut down. you know those lga775 heatsink ? pain is the back, at least one of em pins won't fit inside the hole of the mobo, one of my pins nearly broke.
And i was looking at the cpu closer, is there enough glue on it ? i think not :(

right now am back on Celeron, no reboots yet even at 86
I think theres a problem with the CPU itself, i got the CPU from the PC in THIS thread :P

thats just you thermal paste, you should remove it all now and replace it. (plus is looks badly applied from the picture)

It looks like clay! :P

It shouldn't be hard, I'd remove it and re-apply some new stuff, it could be overheating...

should do, as long as it the sterile wipes and doesn't have any sort of moisturising crap in them

And make sure you're very careful when handling the CPU. Make sure you don't have any on the hand holding the actual CPU and leave a residue on the underside. Q-tip and rubbing alcohol would be best, but maybe try squeezing the pad over a q-tip to moisten it?

just use a bounty with alcohol to clean the processor, put a bit of thermal paste on the processor and spread it around the entire processor coating it with a thin coat using your finger inside of a plastic bag. don't just put it in the middle i found that temperatures decrease dramatically when the thermal grease is spread out evenly throughout the entire processor.

It varys for different CPU's, single cores apparently need a small dot in the middle, dual cores need a line down the middle...

I actually tried a few of the methods and the line down the middle worked better than all, including spreading it around...

there is no need to take the cpu out of its socket. So long at you can get you finger in there the best way to apply and remove the paste is while it is held securely in the socket

Yeah, they're the sterilising ones...
then they are fine

I always spread it thinly over the whole raised area of the heatsink. Most people put far to much on when they spread the whole heatsink and hence this impacts performance. An amount about the size of a grain of rice will be enough to cover the whole cpu

Dan - Wait, Dual's need one line down the middle?! (oops...)

Uh Hu :P

So you're a spreader, eh! :P What temps do you get, what CPU is it also?

my desktop still hasn't been unpacked since i moved in and is back on the old Prescott cores. But recent rigs Ive built on c2d cores have seen load temps about 55* on air
but i only test run them before passing them to the client
