CPU overheating

I just got two Pi calculations running at the same time for a while and I got up to 83C on the proc, 43 on the mobo sensors, and 40c on the HDs!! I have the Raidmax X-1 case, A 120mm out, 80 in on the front and 2x80 out the power supply, 7700alcu on the proc, and the stock fan on my graphics card. If I replaced the X800 fan and put a arctic cooler on it and replace the 80 in the front to a 120mm, would I see overall temps decrease much? I am thinking that the graphics card spewing hot air right to the CPU might cause temps increasing overall. any help appreciated!

Have you put any AS5 on the CPU? You first need to make sure that your case is dust-free or close to it, that includes all your fans. Dust can increase the temp. Also, make sure your computer is in a well ventilated area where it can take in cool air.

If you put an arctic cooler on your video card then your video cards temp will drop, nothing significant will happen to your CPU. Adding a 120mm to the case should bring in more air but it's not going to drop your temps greatly.

so eliminating 50c air coming almost directly to the CPU wont help much? Currently there is some dust in the case, which I will clean out soon. Also, the back of the computer is a foot away from a corner, so I suspect that warm air could be recirculating into the CPU duct

You gotta move a lot of air in and out of your case. Otherwise you're using hot case air to cool the CPU, and that isn't really going to work. Usual practice is to have the cool room air come in from the front and get hot air exhausted out the rear.
I run Folding@Home with 100%CPU utilization and max CPU temp in a 74°F(23°C) ambient air room is 102°F(38°C) by using direct exterior air ducting to the CPU.

Bad Idea

I'm pretty sure running the computer with the side panel off is a bad idea. The cases are designed to move air with all for sides on. with one side off, the air just sits there and does not circulate!!!
i'm not an expert so don't hold me 2 it:D

Though good circulation is important to cooling the CPU, I think this is more an issue with the HSF itself not being installed properly. The 7700-AlCu should be doing much better than a 40C temperature delta.

try running with the side off, and see if it helps temps.
The worst thing you can do.
No, there are much worse things that can be done :). I would even recommend doing this to see if poor circulation is the culprit.

What the hell are you doing to get 83C on your processor?

Thanks for moving it Apj101!

The first time I installed it I by accident tilted it on install because of the VERY stiff spring, so I reinstalled it later without tilting it, however, the spring was so loose by then I wasn't sure about it being right. so that's the background story:)
