CPU Power Connector Question

On my ASUS P7P55D-E I have an 8-pin CPU power connector, but there is a cap over half of the plug so that only 4 pins can be seen and used. On my PSU I have 2x4-pin power connector to make 8-pin (they break way). Do I need to plug in both 4-pin connectors or only one? I have one 4-pin in at the moment and it's working fine but I was wondering if having all 8-pins in would be advisable. In the manual all it says is "don't forget to plug in the 8-pin power connector otherwise the system won't bot" - but it does boot fine.

what difference will having all 8-pins plugged in make? if there is a cap on 4 of the pins doesn't that kind of indicate that I should leave it in there and run on 4-pins?

No. The board will most likely run fine on the 4 pin depending on what cpu you have. Higher power boards come with the 8 pin connection. I wouldn't take the chance, I would remove the cap and use all 8 pins.
