CpU Problem

Hello,
I have an old computer, I am not willing to buy new one, because basically I need it only for studies and 1 game, witch works more or less fine. My old processor was Sempron 2200. Now I have purchased Amd Athlon 2800 Xp.
Now this will be a long story.... :) I have left my PC at my room back in the student’s resident’s hall and left for summer vacations. Only my girlfriend was using it for some bullshit. So when being away I got the new processor and took it back to my room few days ago. My first mistake was that i didn’t check my PC before putting in the new CPU. Whatever... So when I put in the new CPU, my PC loads and in the 1st screen it is written then there is no IDE 80 conductor cable installed, I didn’t change nothing except the processor, so I don’t understand the basis of this error. The processor is running only at 1.25 GHz. In is also written then the PC has detected that the new CPU is installed and it is supposed to be configured in BIOS. Now normally to get the desired speed I could change the frequency settings in BIOS from 100 to 166. But when I do that my PC fails to start. I need to take out the battery and reset my BIOS. My PC only loads when BIOS is set to fail safe settings. After all this fuss I have decided to put in the old CPU back, but strangely I still get the same "no conductor cable" error and it fails to load. So it can't be the new CPU fault. My power supply is 300 W, maybe it might be the cause, other problem that I and my friend were thinking about is old bios, but BIOS isn’t that old...

SO the problem question would be, why can’t I set the frequency in my BIOS 133/166? on my new processor. When I do it fails to restart.

Well it suppost to run at 333 or to say 166 FSB, check the voltage in the bios, for the 2800 it was 1.65. Plus your ram might be running 1 on 1 with the FSB and overclocking your ram, what speed ram is installed in it? You need to install a 80 wire, 40 pin IDE cable for faster transfer rates.

The error happens to everyone. On my 1.3GHz, my 2.8, and my E4300. I'm on my 1.3 right now, even with the error everything should still be rollin smoothly. I suggest researching the motherboard and seeing if it will even support an Athlon.

Hi,
I will give some additional information. I have managed to set it on 133, but it crashes when i play, i think it is because of overheating, i will buy some CPU paste tomorrow, because i didin't use any when punting in the CPU. My mother board does support AMD's.

I think that is the reason why your computer is acting up.

Could this be the reason why it doesn't even load with 166 frequency? It overheats momentarily overheats when starting and doesn't start at all ? If so then i will solve this problem, then if not what should my settings in BIOS be to support 166 ? should it be Auto or SDP (I think thats the way its called)
