CPU problems?

I have built a computer recently and i have been having boot up problems. My computer will turn on for a split second and then shut back off.I have tested to memory, the motherboard, the case pins, all my expansion cards etc. the only thing i can think of is if somehow my CPU is to blame. Is there any way I can tell for sure, or are there any signs i can look for?

Yup, what are your PSUs rating? particulaly the +12v amperage, found on the sticker on the side of the PSU.

I had the same problem. Turned out it was a dead CPU ( I fried it by not using a heatsink/fan) Got a new one, worked.

you forgot the heatsink? ouch!! how much did that accident cost you:eek:

Well, the funny thing is, i didnt forget it, i purposely ran it without it. I thought that runing it "naked" meant without a heatsink...lol, i was way wrong. It means to take off the heat spreader cap, and run with the hsf directly on the dye. It cost me about 300 dollars, cuz I went to AMD, and got a new mobo.

Well the PSU is working fine, its a 520 watt, and i tested it. As far as using standoffs when mounting the mobo, i've never heard of having to use those until now. I know i've installed other mobos without them and they've worked fine. Is it just some cases that require them or have i just been getting lucky all this time?

Some cases have raised screwholes for the mobo, which elimenates the need for standoffs, or at least reduces the number required. Other than that standoffs or risers have to be put between the mobo and case. If you've just screwed the motherboard directly into the case, you're in real trouble. If you're lucky, your mobo will still work. If you're unlucky, it's fried and you'll have to get a new one.

Yeah, no standoffs=fried mobo. Unless like what cee said, and it is raised screw holes. Good luck man

standoff look liek this, they are used to screw the board to the case. It is unlikely that you havent used them (but not impossible)
