my mom has a compaq and she wants to upgrade the cpu... is their a prog out their that i can see wich socket type it is

Whats the model number of her Compaq? Desktop or Laptop? You also have to check out the motherboard specs too. You'll have to see if the new processor you're planning to get is will be compatible to it or not.

To find out the rest of the specs on the compy, there's links in QUESTIONS 101.

But also realize changing the cpu may involve changes to the PSU, MOBO and RAM

You can always look on the chip and it usually says the socket type. Also, upgrading prebuilt computers can be a pain because they are not made with upgrading in mind, maybe you should just buy more ram for it if it has unused DIMMS.
it would be easier to download cpu-z and have it tell you, lol

Popping open the case an looking at the socket usually is the most absolute way to be sure. But CPU-Z i great iffor some reason the socket is shaved and doesn't say or something...

Even if 2 CPU's share the same type of socket, does not guarantee compatability. I'd say find out the specs of your motherboard first.

Example1: Some Celeron/Pentium boards will not with Celeron D or it may be a slot 1.

Example2: Find out what the fastest processor the mobo can handle. It may be at max already.

alright thanks guys

she wants me to build her a pc but wants to do it cheap... she does no gaming lol... so i was thinking maybe a celeron D 2.8ghrz LGA 775 $80 read all good reviews about it good bang for the buck... a cheap asus mobo, and like 512mb ddr ram she would prolly be ok wouldnt you think, she likes to multitask such as many browsers... uhm email, msn, stuff like that nothing hardcore
