So i have been looking into getting a new computer. I will be using the cpu for email, web brwsing and the occasional spreadsheet and word proc. Now i see that dell has different processor speeds like 2.4 to 3.0 what speed should i aim for. I know bigger is better but at what point will i be paying for more than i will ever need? Thanks for any help.

i would go with the 3.0 its not that much more and it will last you alot longer

so depeding on the deal i see should i get a digital of analog monitor? Will it matter for what i am doing. NO GAMING!

i would get 512 mb of memory and if your doing no gaming i would get analog but you could get digital if you really wanted to

If your not gaming and all your doing is e-mail and spred sheets. i would go for a slower one, the 3.0 would just waist your money if your not going to use the speed. As for how long its going to last, what would the cpu speed do with how long its going to last?

i would get the 3.0 just cause it will give you better performance and last you alot longer

A 1GHz machine and 256MB RAM will be plenty fast enough for checking e-mail and using various Windows programs like Excel or Word etc.

3GHz and 512MB DDR is game worthy IMO, overkill for any e-mail PC.

hehe

Time it will last before the next upgrade is needed, not the components lifetime..

lol...unless e-mailing and using M$ programs suddenly becomes very CPU intensive i don't think you will ever need a new CPU. a 300MHz PDA checks my dad's e-mail at lightning speeds.

Well of course so does my P2 350, but if to buy a P4 today that means little.

I'm only asking because i don't know. How does a faster cpu last longer? i would think a faster cpu would last not as long because its faster so it would run hoter. Making it not last as long. Please explane.

i meant he wont have to upgrade later on to a faster processor if he decides to game or do other cpu intensive software

yeah I agree you dont need a fast computer at all for the things you want to do, you could probably get one from dell for $500 and it would be MORE than eneugh for all the things you stated. Digital/Analog(CRTvsLCD) - its really just a preference thing. digital costs more and has worse quality on average but its small lightweight and looks cooler haha its up to you..
