cpu temp 57c/134f after Comp USA repair

Building my first computer. Changed out the stock fan/heatsink that came with the CPU because of loudness. I was a little nervous if I used enough thermal paste and I did not want something bad to happen to my new cpu, so I brought it in to Comp USA to check my installation. I watched him and he took off the heatsink/fan and looked at the paste I applied, he asked another tech if it was enough and they agreed it was and he just stuck it back on. Is this proper? I would have thought that it should have been cleaned off and reapplied. Could this be the cause of my temperature. Or is my temperature okay and I should just stop worrying about it? Thank you. Frank

The paste should be cleaned off and reapplied. What were the temps before taking it compusa?

Sorry, as I mentioned, I did not want to boot up the computer after the change out for fear I might hurt the CPU.When I took it in, they did not check the temp before either so I can't answer your question. I am going to go back to the store but can you educate me a little as to why it needs to be cleaned and reapplied?

So are you concerned about the 57c reading? Also, is there a you tube instruction for applying thermal paste that you could recommend. I have viewed many and can't find two of them to agree. Thanks again. Frank

Yes, 57 degress C is a little high. I have the 965 running idle at 51 degrees C on the stock cooler that came with it. I plan on buying a better cooler for it soon.

As far as the way to apply thermal paste, there are a couple different ways to do it.

1. The most common method. Apply a small drop of paste, about the size of a grain of rice, on the cpu and just push the heatsink down on the cpu and squish it and lock in place.

2. The method I use. Apply a small drop on the cpu, you can use a credit card or similar to spread it on the cpu, then lock the coolor down. I use my figner but only after cleaning my hands to get rid of most of the oils.

I got a feeling I used too much because the instructions with the cooler said to apply to both the cooler and the cpu. If it has too much, can that cause the heat problem? Thank you. Frank

Just an update here to let you know about the temp. I just cleaned off my cpu fan and it now idles at 41-42 degrees. So you definately have a heat issue.
