cpu temp

i built a new rig i7-p6t-6gb-gtx275-haf 932-650w thermaltake but i didnt get a thermal paste with my core i7 and i havent installed an OS till now but when i checked the hardware config in bios it shows my temp cpu to be 42 degrees celsious is it right

Bios is a no load temp, as long as you are running with the thermal paste that was already on the stock heatsink you will be fine as long as not overclocking.

what will be the normal temp once i instal an os

Hard to tell, many variables, will you have fan speed set to auto or always 100%? How many fans are in your case? Whats your ambient temp? Hows your cable management in your case? etc. As long as you arent overclocking you should be fine...

BIOS temps, while not under load, are based on full-speed CPU operation; meaning, no scaling is taking place. So while the CPU is not being stressed as it would be opening programs and doing intensive work, it is running at it's full clock speed. For certain systems, it's a great way to monitor/gauge temps.
