CPU thermal interface

It's about intel pentium4 531 (3GHz). I bought it and installed it on the MB. When I turned the pc on, smoke appeared .
It's possible that it is not the cpu because i assembled the components myself.
The cpu cooler didn't start (I think). That thermal interface was damaged after I checked the cpu.
What are possibble melfunctions?
tnx

Just to varify.

When you installed the CPU, you put on thermal paste/compound about the size of a grain of rice to the size of a small pea, then installed the heatsink/fan, and plugged the HSF into the motherboard, correct?

the paste was already on cpu cooler.
First to ask - That smoke should indicate that the cpu or the mb is dead. Is that correct? I tried the psu on my old pc, and it's working fine.

The cpu is intel pentium4 531 3,0 Ghz
Mb is ECS P4M890T-M2
They are compatible.
I didn't see exactly where the smoke came from.
I'm not sure about connecting the mb to psu. I connected the 20pin cable to mb (standars power supply) and a cable to ATX_12V1 (auxiliary PS) but i didnt connect PSU to SYS_FAN on the mb cause the connectors (4Pin) are different (it looks as if they were mirror reflectioned?)
Now when i try to start it, it doesnt respond, nothing, not the PSU cooler, nothing.

By the sound of it, the motherboard is dead,.. ofcourse i cant be 100% certain.
If you take a look on the CPU (front and back side) do you see any changes od colour, or other weird spots ( hard to describe, but you'll know what i mean when you see it) also, does the CPU have a metal plate on top, or can you see the silicium square when you remove the heatsink? (Im not fammilair withthe 531.. :( )

the cpu look fine, i guess.
OK, if i take the cpu and its fan out and connect mb to psu, should psu fan start working?

i dont know for sure tbh... but i know if you short 2 pins of the psu together, it should fire up.. I'll go check wich 2 cables it were exacly

edit: there we go :)

You take a little paper clip or anything metallic, stick one end on the green cable of the 20 or 24 pin connector, and the other end in the black cable of the connector. This should "jump" start your psu without connecting it to the motherboard.

nevermind and thanx. I solved the mystery. The switch cable wasnt connected coorrectly. I'm not sure about smoke, but the psu started to work and the hd as well.

What about that thermal paste. Can you buy it in a computer store?
How do you put it on the cpu cooler???

if i can give you a really good advice about thermal paste..
Zalman ZG-STG1 I know, its more expensive than some Thermal compound,.. but its really, really good :)
the best of all is, it comes in a little bottle with a brush,.. so you just 'paint' it onto the CPU (while its in the socket), make sure you have the whole surface covered, and then put on the heatsink. very easy to apply :o

(Make sure other thermal pad's and compound are removed tough ofcourse )
