What would be my best bet for upgrading my CPU? First of all what would be the BEST I could upgrade to? However I really want to know what would be the most bang for my buckk.... I currently have:

Asus p5NE sli
Windows x64
Nvidia geforce 8600 GTS
Core 2Duo Cpu e7200 2.53 ghz

If you have one I could buy off you that would be great too..!

thanks!

Clock speed isnt everything...the q6600 is Quad core and has 8mb of cache and can easily overclock to 3.3 -3.4.

where as your e7200 is dual core and has 3mb.

It will be a nice upgrade,The Q6700 isnt a bad price these days.

I would try and get the Q9450 over the Q6600 (buy it used for cheaper price)

Q6700 isn't worth the extra $$$.

The Q9450 is 45nm and could overclock as high as 4.0ghz (most get at least 3.6ghz) which will last longer then the Q6600 will. Most get 3.6ghz if they are lucky (and on water) with the Q6600. I can get 3.4ghz but to hot for my personal taste.

Honestly though id save your cash and wait out.....for the $150+ you will spend you can wait a while buy a new mobo/ram/cpu and go I5 which will be a major upgrade over the Q9450 at stock + DDR3 memory.

Nothing really uses a quad-core yet as it is.

Thanks for all the interesting responses guys...

What is the I5? Will it work with my MOBO? and the significance of DDR3 memory? I believe my memory is DDR2.. is this the next generation or something?

I wonder if my software packages would use Quad core technology as I do 3D animation for work and use Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop, After Effects... stuff like that.

Is there a list of supported software?

Does 650i motherboard support 45nm Qaud ?

If not, then the only choice you have is Q6600. Otherwise get Q9400

Does not officially support them, but ScOut had his Q9400 running in his Asus P5N-E Sli. Which he gave me.

Q6700 is cheaper than the 6600 and has a higher stock clock. Plus his board supports it for sure. Don't gamble buying a $150+ cpu and not know if it works for sure.

I would definitely get a Q6700 over a 9505 anyday. It's a lot cheaper (iirc like $150 vs $230), has more L2 cache, and will overclock better due to the higher multiplier.

Actually, a 6MB L2 Yorkfield clock for clock is slightly faster than 8MB L2 Kentsfield

Just forgot to mention, I checked asus website, that board not support other Q9XXX apart from Q9505

BTW, where could you find Q6700 @ $150??

so i was in a store the other day and the salesman told me there was no CPU that I could buy that would make my rig noticeably better...

Is that just his opinion? Or should I still consider getting a Q6700 or Q9505... Should I consider overclocking one of those two? Or maybe even just overclocking my current CPU?

No CPU that will make your rig better? What a tool.

What is your current CPU? I will be getting a Q9400/Q9550 for christmas so i will let you know how it goes.

If you want run a Q9xxx quad you need to flash the bios to the latest version.

I meant while still being cost effective... seems like the performance boost compared to my e7200 OCd @ 3.2 GHz might not be worth it and might be better to wait til I can upgrade my MB and CPU together...

Yeah I would keep your current CPU/mobo for now and save for an I5 or maybe even an I3 system. I3's should kick the pants off any core2 duo and give C2Q's a run. They should overclock like crazy, being 32nm.
