will a wolfdale core2duo be upgradeable to the penryn or the nehalmen processors coming out later this year?

It's not the CPU that matters, in order to find out if the Penryn processors will work with your system, you need to post your motherboard here.

Yeah as I said in your other thread (which you have 2 of!) it matter on your motherboard and not on whatever CPU you currently have.

The 650i is a downgrade from the 680i...
+1, if you can afford it, the 700 series would be the best choice if you want SLI. If you don't want SLI, then the P35/X38/X48 would be great choices as well, and are cheaper.

The 680i will support the dual core 45nm CPU's but not the quads. However, you'll probably need to flash the bios on the board using a processor it currently supports (65nm). If the motherboard doesn't support it out of the box, then you should have another supported processor on hand.

My suggestion would be to get a board that will support any 45nm chip out of the box. If your looking for a SLI board, then that would be the 780i board, though it is expensive. The other alternatives are the X38 chipset which support crossfire or something like the P35-DS3L or P35-DS3R which are not dual gpu supported.
