Cpu upgrade?

Hello everyone. I was thinking about upgrading my graphics card to a GTX 260, but now I'm thinking maybe a cpu upgrade might be better. I dont know if the 8800GT is bottlenecked at all by a 6000+ (see signature), but I'd imagine a 260 would be.

Instead of upgrading my gpu in the near future, what if I went to like a Phenom II X3 or quad? What about one of the first generation Phenoms? Im not opposed to Intel at all, I just don't want to spend an arm and a leg and I don't mind if I don't buy the best cpu around.

How does a 2.5 ghz Phenom I compare to a 3.1 ghz athlon 64 X2 6000+? Would games that aren't multithreaded see just a 2.5 ghz core or because the arcitecture is different would I see an improvement?

I'm just curious because I think that anything more than an 8800GT might not do the best in my system because of the cpu, so what if I did the cpu instead? My 3dmark score on their free version was like maybe 50 points shy of 1000, which seems kind of low. When it did the cpu test I had like 1 frame per second lol (idk if thats bad but it seems real low). This is a gaming computer. So what do you think? I think GTA4 would see a bigger improvement from a cpu but Im not sure. Thanks.

Yeah sorry I mean't to mention that I intend to install a new board as well with it.

The psu wouldn't be good enough for that card? I thought it would just like barely cover it. Hmmm probably isn't a very good idea.

Nope, because rosewill power supplies are made by some low quality companies such as ATNG, Solytech, Youngyear, etc while quality power supplies come from ones such as FSP, Channelwell , Seasonic, etc. I wouldnt risk a 4850 on a rosewill 500W, but an ocz/pcpower&cooling/corsair/antec 500W would run a 4850 as they are quality units.

I would go for a Phenom II 955 BE with a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P with 8 Gig of DDR3, if possible.
:]

Hey thanks for the help everybody!

2048Megabytes, does the arcitecture make that processor faster? Its 2.6 ghz, and mines 3.1. I just want to be able to understand like what speed in a Phenom II or I would be equivalent to my processor. Thanks for all the help!

Yes the Phenom II 2.6MHz will be faster then and Athlon 3.1MHz. I have a few question what is you over all budget between the CPU and mobo. How much RAM will you be using any less the 2GB I would upgrade. Just so you know if you get a Phenom II with an AM3 mobo then you will have buy DDR3 RAM.

Ghz, not mhz

Also, the Phenom II is three cores while the athlon is two cores, the Phenom II is 45nm which means it runs alot cooler, and clock for clock does more commands/clock meaning more effecient/faster per clock.

Did i do that:P I was looking for new RAM so i guess it made me think of MHz

Not anymore. Several motherboard manufacturers of AM2+ boards are offering BIOS updates offering AM3 support.
I just bought the system in my sig, (CPU and mobo was a newegg combo deal), and even though I should have went with a DDR-3 motherboard, I tried to save a few bucks and get a cheaper DDR-2 board, which still leaves me room to upgrade to a DDR-3 board in the future.

Maybe you should reread what I said because I said nothing about AM2+ motherboards and yes I know all about that my motherboard supports AM2,AM2+,and AM3 chips. Why would he wont to get an AM2+ motherboard with DDR2 RAM the upgrade to a new board and RAM. He is actually losing money that way because Now he is paying for 2 new board it is better to get an AM3 board with DDR3 RAM if he can afford it otherwise AM2+ and DDR2 will be fine.

AM3 motherboards mean just that, they have a socket AM3 connector which is ddr3 only.
