CPU vs. GPU?

I've heard lots of people here talk about the importance of cpu vs. gpu, etc.

But i was wondering if anyone had a link to a page that actually had a breakdown of the relationship between the cpu and gpu?

like, at what point does the processing get sent to the gpu rather than the cpu, and at that point in a game (for instance) what are the remaining responsibilities of the cpu?
