I was running a virus scan using AVG to clear all the viruses my dads laptop has picked up and i think it must have deleted some thing Windows needs to start up because now when ever it starts it automatically saves settings and logs off then takes me back to the log in page.
any ideas?
it can be started in safe mode, i tried a system restore but that disnt work :(

I thought thats what you ment. will i loose stuff on my hard drive doing that?
thanks for your help by the way.

The repair option deletes important system files and reinstalls them. You will not lose any important info. As hpi stated, DO NOT reformat.

My windows xp came pre loaded, ive downloaded one from a torrent site but can't get it to start when i put the disc in the laptop.
and to top it all off the laptop no longer runds in safe mode.
I ran AVG again n i think it finished the job.

any suggestions???

Don't use or discuss anything taken from a "torrent site." What's the model of your laptop?

It's a Toshiba Satellite.
i had a thought the other day, the screen that comes up and asks for my password isnt the ususal one, it's just a windows xp box with my username n blank space for a pssword. i was wondering if maybe it was a different password to the one i set up as the user. like an administrator one or one that comes with xp???

yeah safe mode used to work, but now takes me to this new password page that has come up and i get the same problem.

When you go into safemode does it show more than one Admin. accounts? It sounds like a virus has taken over your pc.

Well, it's not looking good , if you could borrow someone's xp disk and do a repair , if not looks like you'll have to reformat. One last thing have you tried to clear the Cmos , look at your manual it should tell you how to do it.

Ive established the password i'm using is the right one. so learing the cmos wouldnt really help would it?
think i'm going to have to try n get hold of an xp disk n do a repair.
