Crashed PC, No OS

I used to have Microsoft Windows XP Home on my old Acer Aspire 8000 Series desktop, that is until it crashed. I now need to put a version of Linux on, and some web server software so I can continue hosting my website from it. Anyone have any suggestions or info on which version of Linux and which server would be best suited to my needs? Thanks.

Most distros will server as good server systems; I am biased towards the *buntus, but any major distro will suit. As for the server software, Apache is the way to go hands down.

Thanks for the help, I'll try it now. Anywhere you recommend to download from, or should I just look around and see what I get? I have also tried Apache before, but didn't really understand it, any free online tutorials you know of? Thanks.

I keep trying to install Kubuntu 7.04, but for some reason, the boot just keeps freezing on installing mouse driver A:\. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please, does anyone know if I need to format my HDD to boot Kubuntu 7.04, because there is a corrupted version of Windows ME on it, which for some reason will not load. And, when I boot, a message saying mouse driver installed appears and then doesn't work - it freezes. Could this be that the bootable file is on a DVD, and not a CD, because I didn't have any CD's spare? Thanks in advance.

How can I erase the current OS, if the PC needs to be on and running Windows, u cant format the disk windows is running from. Any suggestions on how to format with the pc being off?

did you download a distro and burn to disk ?
if yes, then boot the distro and install it (it will format you winME)
if you really need to get a distro up and running just get PCLinux

As the PC crashed and I have no OS, I have an XP disk licensed for a Hyunju machine, and another for a HP Compaq NX8220. I was wondering if I could ring acer, ask to use one of those but use their product key, because I've tried about 12 distros of linux, and none will boot - maybe its because I burned the iso to DVD, not CD (none spare) - what do you think? (Help greatly appreciated).

what i find strange is that 12 distros were burned and none of them boot, that cannot be the dvd or cd, its not logical, has to be a problem (hardware on the pc you're booting it on)

Yeah, I found a hardware prob and now its fixed, so the only thing left to do is try a version of linux - its a cd iso, but i only got dvd's. I was gonna decompress it with winrar and burn it to a dvd, but d you think it would be worth going out and getting some cds?

YES it's worth it, especially now you're talking linux most are cd's except for the big names which are dvd's.
