Crazy Screen Errors

Hi Guys,

In the past 2 weeks I've ran into this really weird problem with my computer screen (see below). It's hard to describe, but here goes nothing. It appears that green, repetitive lines appear on my screen. It is not permanent, but often long lasting. It usually happens when I start my computer and also when I begin running programs. What I've noticed is that what causes the problems, also fix them as well. For instance, running a new program may at times fix the problem.

I've been trying to figure out the cause of this. Intrinsically, I thought it was a monitor problem, but since it comes and goes, I figured it can't be. Friends have told me that it's a video card problem. This may be true but the programs that effect it is anything from Media Player, Adobe Photoshop, or Mozilla Firefox. Even opening a new window in the Explorer can cause it. I'm figuring it's bad memory.

Any suggestions?

(BTW if the pics not showing, let me know. My computer screen is still messed up)

So yours was a monitor problem? I'll try swapping mine with my brother's LCD and see if it helps...

I've moved this to video cards and monitors.

It looks like your video card is overheating. See if the cooler on it is plugged up with dust or something.

Unfortunately, it's not the case for me. I swapped it out to no avail. Problem persists to my brother's LCD. Any other suggestions?

Previously, I removed my video card and completely removed all dust/dirt on it. The problem still is on/off. Do you think prolong build up can cause permanent damage to the card or is there something else I need to fix?

It could, when you cleaned it did you take the cooler right off? Also make sure it's still making contect with the GPU and memory if it covers the video memory as well.

Never really took off the cooler. I just popped the video card out, pulled any lose debris, and shot compressed air in all the nooks and crannies. Maybe I'll try installing a better fan to increase air circulation.

Yet if it's an overheating problem, I still find it strange that this happens after my computer's been off and cool for a while.

I'm trying to fix it, I'm going to go take apart my computer tonight to clean the dust and everything. This happens on/off ever since Tuesday. Although if I hit my monitor occasionally it switches back to normal :o

If it is a video card problem, would AMD replace it (I have a ATI Radeon 9800)?

According to The Warranty at http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=281

The Warranty States:

Here is a list of examples that likely DO NOT require warranty service.

1. System restarts to a black screen after installation.
2. Display corruption.
3. Random system hangs.
4. Game or Application performance.

Can anyone shed some light on what I can do if my video card is the problem?

1: RMA attempt
2: Swear words fly
3: go to Newegg.com
4: ????
5: profit XD

Sorry this is an old 4chan instruction-like meme..

You'll attempt to RMA it, if for any reason they refuse to, you call the guy a "pompous piece of **** moron", hang up, go to newegg and buy a new card

Yea I kinda figured. I sent a request anyways. But I swear, I hate how companies can sell products that have a life expectancy of ~2-5 years, then you have to buy a new one and the cycle repeats. Corporate robbery!

Funny thing happened. Normally I have my case upright and open. A few days ago I decided to take a look at it while it was on, so I turned it on its side. Almost instantaneously, I noticed change in the clarity. After a restart, my screen was flawless and I didn't notice any defects in the display. I'm thinking it's a loose connection. What do you think?
