Ok so i just got my new HDDs back from WD and went to install windows to start setting up my dual boot. Well it gets to the point where it says "windows is loading files" but when the progress bar reaches the end a prompt screen flashes up and says "windows has failed to load please insert your windows instalation disk and restart your computer and select repair your computer" of course the problem is that I already have my installation cd in and can't get to the windows install screen. So i installed linux to make sure all my hardware is up to par. Well im rocking kubuntu, which i can't figure out how to connect to the internet with a wireless card, (but thats a seperate problem)

So what in the heck is wrong with this stupid windows disk? if it helps i am trying to install ultimate 64bit... and yes i have used it successfully twice before and i also removed 2g of my 4g ram so that bug is not the problem. Please help... this is crazy.

What did you use for partitioning and formatting the drives there? There are a few things that will put a damper on any installation like a faulty dimm for one. Running memtest to test each dimm would be one thought to rule out faulty memory.

With a distro on you likely used the version of GParted included on the live disk for partitioning the drives. What I've been finding having a working triple boot of XP tossed into the mix along with the 64bit version of ubuntu 8.10 and Vista is staying with the separate live for cd release of GParted.

That sees far more options included for insuring the right type of partition where the version seen with live to install only allow one of each type of root, swap, mount, extended when going to partition. The installer for live distros like kubuntu assume that is the only OS being installed there.

As an update, i used kill disk to format but they came direct from factory. I have run mem test and let it role for 24 hours with no errors. I'm only using one 2g stick, i have flashed the bios to factory, i have tried using only an ide drive, sata drive, unplugged all the usb accessories except the keyboard, all to no avail. WTF is going on?

If you are trying to install Windows on the sata drive first unplug the ide model since ide will be seen as default by the Windows installer there. The ide drive until a change of default boot device is made in the bios itself will remain default.

The initial error you pointed out suggests the drive set as default in the bios is not the one you are trying to install Windows on. Likewise if you removed the NTFS primary to try installing Linux to the same drive with the other set as default that won't boot either.

The thing I am looking at there is the "Windows has failed to load" message suggesting Windows can't finish installing since the other drive is set as default. You now simply go into the boot order section of the bios and look for the hard drives item there.

As soon as you highlight that and press enter you should see a new screen come up listing all hard drives installed. Since you have two drives each a different type it won't take much to move the correct drive upto the top of that and press F10 or use the exit/save option when leaving the bios.

From there you will see if the installation will finish installing and load the distro if things went well with the repartitioning/reformat there.
