Creating a MIDI File

Lately, I've been really into making games; not 3D or anything like today's games, but old school, like on the SNES. All gamers know good games need good music.

I figured, to match the SNES-like graphics, I'll use MIDI music instead of say, an MP3. I'm looking for some downloadable software that will allow me to create MIDI files from scratch. I'm not looking to convert any songs or anything, just so you're aware. Upon skimming some results I got on Google, I'll need some type of connecter thing to hook up a keyboard to my computer? Bleh, I don't know. Really, any information on this will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

One peice of software I use is called PowerTab. It's mainly for transcribing songs but you can use it to write midi songs. You can only add 10 instruments (something like that) so its slightly limited but unless you're writing a very complex song it's good.
