creating an XP image

Hey all,

I just want to make sure i understand correctly.

My parents computer seems as though it may be failing, if i create an image of the hard drive should i be able to put that image on any hard drive i stick in the machine? Or what about if i have a better (clean) image from another machine am i able to stick that image on a hard drive in my parents machine and have it work correctly?

On Windows you can't transfer a Image from PC-A to PC-B, because Windows activation is tied to the Hardware.

You can make a Image of PC-A Drive, and transfer to New Drive for PC-A.

I usually use Western Digital Drives, and they have software called Data Lifeguard that is easy to use to image old drive to new one.
 
If the Hardware like the Motherboards are exactly the same it may work. I don't know anything about the VM question.
