Creating Lan network

I know this may be a bit noob but how do I create a Lan network? I have 2 computers, both running on XP SP2, connected to 1 modem. how can i create a Lan Network (for gaming and stuff)? thanks

well you should be in one now. I take it that the modem is a router combo (since you have two computers connected) in that case you are in a LAN. Each computer should have a IP like 192.168.1.100. you can connect to the other computer by useing that computers ip address

apparently, the computers cant see that they're in a lan network. i tried playing starcraft with my bro using multiplayer but the game says that it can't detect a network. is it just the game?

it most likely is. One thing to try is to ping the other computer. Look up the ip address (go into network connections and click on the LAN connection, then go to status and details) then on the other computer go to run and type cmd and hit enter. Then just type ping followed by the computers ip address. if you get a reply, then it is just the game. But in most games you should be able to type the ip address of the other computer

i managed to get a reply from the other com. will try another game now. will post the result l8r. thanks

okay. i tried following the instructions from this website http://www.digitgeek.com/how-to-create-a-lan-connection-between-2-pcs/. the 2 computers managed to detect each other and i was able to play warcraft. but the problem is, by doing that, the internet is shut down. which mean i can play LAN but cant access the internet in anyway. is there another way to set up a LAN network?

That is a LAN, LAN=local area network. Which means computers connected to a device or set of devices and are on the same network. Go into your Router Settings while all devices that connect to it are on. Post the IP's of your devices and your Subnet mask.

Looking over the page you went to, i would not recommend that. That is the correct way to connect them, but that is not the best. You should be able to just connect like you normally do.

If you can can you try a sketch of your network
IE:
Internet>modem>router>computer one and computer 2

Also when you put the computer back onto the network that it was on in the first place and you remove the ip settings. Go into the cmd (start>run cmd) and type "ipconfig /all" And copy and paste everything on the screen. (just do this on one computer. we should have enough info from that

take both your computers, and either hook the up wirelessly to a router, or use ethernet cables. If you do not have a router, you can take 1 ethernet cable and hook them up that way. After the computers are hooked up, check both computers. They should say that they are connected, it the taskbar Icon tray (next to your clock). If not, make usre that the adaptars are both enabled and check again. When you get connected, try a game in muplityplayer again, via lan. If you still have nothing, make sure both games are set to lan connectin, also know as T1. Try connencting again. If you still have nothing, go to your control panel, and run the connenction wiard. Do this using the classic view, it is easier. After you ran the network wizard setup thingamajig, it will ask you if you want to make a setup thing to run on the other computers for the network. do this, then run the wizard on oyur other computer, using the the setup you created just earlier. It is easiet if you use a stick drive. A CD will work. Then try connecting games again. If you STILL cannot get it to work, try multiple different games. Other then that, Sorry, i can't help u.

thanks for the info guys. but i just screwed my old com over so now i cant use it. will post again when it's usable. and just do you know, your help has not been a waste.
