"Cross-over"-network doesn't work

I've got a cross-over cable between my desktop-PC and my laptop. You can play games over the network, but I can't find the other computer from any of the computers. I can't get access to shared files. I can't even see the other computer. There's no way to access the other computer, but the games are working. I've always had this problem. I has never worked...

Are you running a firewall that might be blocking the particular port for file sharing(I forget what it is right off...) Are you sure you have all the correct rights and everything setup? Have you tried typing in the IP address of the other machine? Go to Start > Run > and type \\192.168.1.101 or whatever your computer's IP is you're trying to access. Also, if this doesn't work, can you ping the other computer. Start > Run > type CMD, then type PING (your IP, no \\ )

somtimes if file sharing is not enabled, the computers wont show up under workgroup computers or network neighborhood.
