Hello, i was wondering if there is any significant performance gain over a 6950 x2, if i were to use a 6990 and a 6950, would that provide a significnt performance gain?

it has been a while since I read anything about crossfiring but I thought you had to use two cards from the same "family" (ex. 6950 and 6950 not 6950 and 6990).

I could be wrong so I am interested to find out if it is possible.

From what I heard, as long as it's in the same family (6900 series, 6800 series, etc.) it should be fine. Again, like you, I could be wrong haha :P

So long as the first two numbers match, they will work. A 6990 is actually just 2 underclocked 6970's on a single PCB, and a 6970 is just a 6950 with extra shaders unlocked.

There is one exception to this - the 5970 and 58xx cards. A 5970 is 2 x underclocked 5870's on one PCB, so it will work in a mutli-GPU set up with a 5830, 5850 or a 5870, as well as with another 5970.

Regarding the original question, you are comparing 2 x 6950's to a 6950 + 2 x 6970's, albeit underclocked 6970's. You are going to see much greater performance with a 6990 + 6950, however it is some what of a waste. A single 6990 is going to plow through anything and everything, so why spend the extra? You are better off pocketing the extra money to then spend on upgrades later down the line, or something else

So your saying you want to replace one of your 6950s with a 6990. Yeah you would see some preformance gain. But for the price difference in my opinion its a waste of money for the difference. You would be better off getting another 6950 and run Tri C/F.

I thought performance gain for 3 video cards was poor? If its viable im willing to give it a try, it would be much cheaper to buy a third card and buy a trifire psu
