crt or lcd

i have a 17 inch lcd monitor and whenever i go to a computer cafe or something they all have crt monitors and they seem to run smoother, is it because crt monitors are better?

It depends on the LCD. My guess is that your seeing ghosting, which happens when the pixels change to a different color, and when you have a monitor with a high response time, thats what will happen. If you have a good response time <12ms, and have high brightness and contrast, LCD's look much nicer.

Alright the response time on mine is 25 ms, that does'nt seem very good. So crt monitors have very short response times which makes them better for gamers on a budget?

CRT's have a response time of around 2-4ms i believe. They are very good for gaming, the only downside is there not as bright as some LCD's.

And yes, 25ms is very slow.

A CRT has superior refresh rates, and the resolutions are generally higher. Also they are considerably cheaper.
A LCD has good refresh rates and acceptional resolutions. One big problem with LCD (and DLP tv's) is light is leaked through pixels from the backlight, so you will never get a perfect black, unlike CRT.

the type of CRT doesnt matter as much as an LCD, so i would just for one thats cheap, looks good, and has a decent refresh rate.

Just to remind everyone:
LCDs aren't that much more expensive than CRTs.
A good 17" LCD costs around $175-$200. A good CRT costs around $50-$90.

LCD's are coming down in price, but CRT's are still cheaper. And you could probably get a CRT for free somewhere, i know i get around 5 a day at my work.

try 0.8 or 0.9 milliseconds.....

Even a 12ms LCD wouldn't be bad, but I wouldn't go much above that. You should be able to get a good one on sale for $150-$200 at most retailers.
