Crytek 900$ PC Why does it use windows XP /w sp2

As i am selecting parts for building my very first PC, I can't help but wonder... Why windows XP with SP2 (service pack 2)?
I wonder this because the goal that the Crytek crew had when they started building the 900$ computer is to build a computer that can run Crysis on high but also be under 900$ ( obviously ), but when i went on newegg to look for it, I noticed that it is 200$!!!!

Is there some advantage to having SP2 or did Crytek build there PC when it was cheaper or something?

Is there another XP os that is cheaper but works just as well if not better?

I'm not sure they calculated the cost of the operating system into their total.

Also, I imagine they chose XP over Vista just because that's some people's preference. It certainly uses less memory.
