CS:S lag

While I play CS:S my ping is between 98-400. me getting above 230 is rare but still, you know I want less lag as possible. I know my PC specs are a bit better than the "RECOMMENDED" requirements. Could the lag be from my internet connection? My internet speed is 384kbps(Cable) but I always check my bandwith and I get 438kbps. So, is that the problem?

Are you running a server or playing on another server?

Have a router?

The ports steam uses is this.
Steam friends: 1200 set as UDP.
Steam : 27000 - 27015 set as UDP.
Steam2 : 27020 - 27050 set as TCP.

I always forward the ports when I lagged in CS and it fixed the problem for me...tho this was before 1.6 and steam but should be the same regardless.

Also try to run CS:S on a fast ping server and turn your anti-virus and firewall off and see if you still lag...if you don't then its one of the two.

Also try http://speedtest.net/ and post the results...I have used a few sites that were not correct few said I had 2mbs where I have the 16mb line.

Ping only goes up with either:
1)Your PC has less than the system requirement ( which you said you did so not this one:
2) internet connection.

So in brief, check your internet connection. If on a router, is anyone else using that internet connection? Are you on MSN while playing?

To me, it sounds like you're on a router since you get various pings. It might be because of the router is in another room with sometimes a door closed or open.

It could also be because you're in Europe and you're going on American servers. Distance adds ping.

Hope it helps

yup i have a router. i don't play with any IM program on. and i play on the server. even though if i'm the only one using the internet, i still get a ping between 98-230.

even if my ping is high, my game doesnt look any different than if i were playing with bots. when i play with bots, my ping is 5.

I wish I could tell you what I did to fix this same issue, but I can't. I logged into a server one day which had a pretty high latency and I was back to my normal 20-40 pings...its the weirdest thing.

It's probably the server you play on, since you're pretty far out there, you're probably playing on some US based servers.

Yup play in asia servers, Steam servers work like this
Lets say Host is in US West, Hosted from Los Angeles
You will have lower pings if you live in los angeles than if you live in New York

You can also use filters to only see servers were your ping will only be under 90.

Also when you first enter the battle, usually you get high ping but it comes down afterward. it does that to me :D
