CS:S Server

HELP_ME

i was wondering how to make a CS server by simply opening counterstrike and clicking create server. will other people see this server if i do this? or do i need to port forward and how do i do that. thanks.

I've tried doing that but have never been able to make it work. I was trying to team up with a friend on CSS, so I created a server with a couple bots, and sent him an invite, and when he would accept the invite, there would never be a server response on his side, same went for me when I tried to join his server.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the Create Server feature used for offline game play? I know when I was having problems with my login and couldn't use Steam, I was still able to play the game by using Create Server.

Maybe someone else that's been able to get it working could give you a little better input, but as for me I haven't been able to.

download the above program and install to a seperate folder in your c drive
then check this out, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=343796 after you have done all of that navigate to the folder containing the update and right click the srcds.exe and send to desktop, then right click the shortcut and and properties then the shortcut tag and type this in the target
"C:\Program Files\Valve\HLServer\srcds.exe" -console -game counter strike source +map dm_kingofthehill +maxplayers 10-autoupdate -heapsize524288.
edit that to your setup. there are other things to do so send me an email if you get stuck.

k i did all that, now i have a 33tick server. my download speed is 1000kb and up is a little under 200. what rates do i put for:

sv_maxrate
sv_minrate
sv_maxupdaterate
sv_minupdaterate
sv_maxcmdrate
sv_mincmdrate
fps_max

try this cfg builder http://asylum-gameservers.com/cssource.php
and hear is my rates
sv_maxrate "9999"
sv_minrate "5000"
sv_maxupdaterate "30"
fps_max "90"
if your upload is only around 200 you will only be able to have around 3-4 players anymore and the pings will go sky high.
if you have your own ftp webspace you can keep the maps there for faster downloads hear is how.

// Allow clients to download files
sv_allowdownload "1"
sv_downloadurl "http://*****************"
// Allow clients to upload customizations files
sv_allowupload "0"
good luck and let me know how you go.

ok so you been GREAT so far and helped alot but i have a few questions about those settings. from what i know sv_maxrate is the amount of bandwith the server uses for each client. but i dont have very much bandwith so shouldnt the max be much lower than that? but then again what do i know.

ok and i just started the server up and it says "couldn't exec server.cfg" in console.... whats wrong?

sv_maxrate is the maximun rate allowed anything less than that is fine,
the couldnt exec server.cfg could be due to several things,
do you have a folder called cfg in your css folder if not creat one and go to
http://asylum-gameservers.com/cssource.php and make your cfg there then copy it and past into notepad and save as server.cfg then place it into the cfg folder you created, restart the server and it should work, if you still have problems post more details of what you have done and i will post back.

yes i do have a cfg folder in:

\source dedicated server\cstrike\cfg

the file is called server.cfg but should the file still be a text file? because i have another text file in their taht i called "autoexec" and then it turned into a "microsoft office outlook configuration" file, and it works fine. should i maybe put the server.cfg info in their?

I got all that done last night, I am just at the part where I need to open ports or something to make it an actual server.

What ports do I need and where do they go?

Thanks

the ports are:

1200 - 1200

27000 - 27015

27020 - 27039

dont know what you mean by where they go but if you dont know how to port forward go to www.portforward.com they have a huge list of routers and programs including counter strike, its a great site.

Step by step instructions on making a dedicated counter strike source server on a windows xp platform.
1, download hlds update tool from hear (http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=getsteamnow&cc=GB).
2,make a folder called HLServer in the root of c:\,
3, install the hlds update tool into the HLServer folder you just made,
4, type cmd into run and push return, in the cmd box type C:\HLServer then push return,
then type, hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir C:\HLServer ,into the cmd box and push return ,SIT BACK AND RELAX THIS MIGHT TAKE A WHILE TO UPDATE.when the cmd box says HLDS instillation up to date quit the cmd box.
5, go here (http://asylum-gameservers.com/cssource.php) and make your cfg, then click the get your cfg here tabb then file down and click the select all tab right click the cfg and copy to notepad name the notepad server.cfg and save it in the cstrike/cfg directory,
you can tweak the cfg in notepad if you want to.
6, Now go to the HLServer folder open it and right click on the srcds.exe and send to desktop.
7, right click the shortcut to srcds.exe and select properties, click the shortcut tab, remove what is in the target and type this "C:\HLServer\srcds.exe" -console -game cstrike -autoupdate +maxplayers 20 +map cs_italy .
PLEASE NOTE you need to replace the amount of players in the above with the amount of players your server can handle!
amount of players for your upload speed (a rough guide)
256 kbps 2-4 players,
384 kbps 4-8 players,
512 kbps 8-10 players,
768 kbps 12-18 players,
1,024kbps 20-24 players,
1,284 kbps 26-28 players,
1,512 kbps 30-32 players.
If you want more control over your server then go hear (http://www.mani-admin-plugin.com/) full instructions are available on the website.
And finally if you want to add more maps simply download them put them into your cstrike map folder and wright them into the mapcycle.txt and maplist.txt.
