CS:Source CD

Recently I came across a valid CS:Source CD key and seeing as I don't have the game I borrowed my friend's hl2 CD and I got steam but when I try to install Source I get past the cd key then it says to insert the source CD. I put the HL2 cd in and it won't accept it. So do I need to get a Source CD? If so then how did my friend who had the HL2 CDs get source to work while he doesnt have a source cd?

EDIT: It doesn't look like I can download it unless I purchase the download. I purchased the CD key but I don't have the CD. Is there a free download somewhere?

You need someone with the hl2 cd to bind the key to your account for you. Thats what i did when i purchased a cd key from eBay.
 
Ok, so if I have the HL2 cd's it does me no good correct? I will have to log onto the owner of the cd's account then how would I go about binding it step by step?
