Curious to know

This mal idea has been stuck in my head for a long time. You see, people with computers and no lives program viruses to wreak havoc on peoples machines---much to the programmers' delight. What if a person with spyware is unknowingly directed to a fake Windows update site, downloads "updates", and the "updates" auto execute upon complete installation that has code like Windows that fools Windows into thinking it is official updates?

Now, here's the freaky part. Since the malware is now a part of the OS, it has fooled the OS by immitating certified, official code. Over time during internet use, It will do hidden drive-by downloads, lots of downloads. Virus scanners won't pick up the viruses because they look just like Windows core data. These viruses look for and steal the most obvious personal information...browsers, personal folders, etc. These downloads execute by modifying video drivers.....and loading
gigabytes worth of a 3-D environment, bogging the user's machine down.....at this point, the 3-D environment is a programmers' delight.....perhaps entertaining, perhaps vulgar, perhaps it will break your audio system speakers with overloading sound file frequencies...or cause hearing damage.

Now, if the user shuts their system down and restarts.....they will be locked out of Windows because of the modified boot the malware created.

The user thinks...'okay, I'll just boot into Safe Mode' WRONG. Since the files are now a part of the Windows core, it will boot too. The user is asked to insert a floppy "to correct corrupted Microsoft Windows Files". After writing to the floppy drive....reboot-- The master boot is corrupted (floppy is booted), the BIOS is flashed and corrupted, and the video BIOS is flashed dead. Can't access Windows....

I envision hours of fake error messages, leading the user to hours and hours of more fake downloads, with tons of headaches, lost data.....and eventually a machine that is nothing more than a paper weight.....it's like a gamer's nightmare.

All hard drive data corrupted

Bios corrupted

Video BIOS flashed dead.

Windows screwed

lots of Personal information and passwords stolen

Nasty floppy disk

Speaker and audio system damage or hearing damage

CMOS memory corrupted

Is all this possible? Especially since more children download games....which may be fake games=spyware.........thus slowly destroying the computer.....pissing off parents......and giving week-long headaches to computer users.....not to mention all the taunting mysterious text and the crazy graphical environments......of a more dangerous theme.

BOTTOM LINE: Computer goes to hell in a handbasket just because of spyware. People are forced to replace parts in their computer and re-install Windows. Remember, cable modem users would be hit hardest and most due to bandwidth and speed.

Are you planning something

lol. But yes, that does all sound very realistic and possible. The programming of the spyware or w/e kind of invasion the programmer uses would have to be pretty complex though i would think. i mean if it was incredibly easy, it would be a really big problem. but tricking people into going to a fake Windows site and updating is a bit hard to do in my opinion.

i've never had to deal with a computer so corrupted with spyware and adware and viruses that it's BIOS was corrupted. But i've seen people get locked out of their computers.

Seroisly, just check the domain before you download lol.

People who are really computer ILLITERATE such as young teenagers who download many, many things, and ignorant adults may not bother. Most people I know just want it to work. They will not bother to do anything to increase their knowledge or the way their computers work. Fools do not care.
If ye don't look before ye click. :)

As a result, the "send a computer to hell" series of crapware will give IGNORANT users and children who use the computer and download many things the run for their money! ;)

Eh, greg has a point. If there that stupid they deserve to get it. But I dont really care. I dont/didnt/neverwill download windows updates, or useless crap. :P

Are u planning somthing
lol

I think that one day this could be possible and even in the near future (especialy if some hacker sees this post and decides to vow his life to doing this and destroy every computer on the planet!!). I also think this virus couldnt get into anything other than your hard drive which your can replace, but it would still suck reely bad if it happended. I also think if it happened, virus protection programs would be updated to find the windows file the virus hides in and replaces it with the original somhow.

i dont see how any virus can remain after you've formatted the drive and written 0's to clean it out with WDCLEAR or some such program. but i don't know much about viruses either...

Here is an interesting discussion:

Anomolies....hmm......MBR............hmmmm

Did I mention the nasty bootable floppy?

Insight?

Interesting.

I was thinking the same thing this guy said, "Files really only exist within a known structure. While the "pattern" of some piece of malware might remain on a disk drive that is not completely erased, how could it possible remain, or become functional, if it is not contained within a specific file that is at some point executed?"

But then someone else said they can remain on the drive and not harm anything. But the second you install Windows again or any other OS that it can get into, that's when it simply re-emters and attacks again. You did wipe the drive of every resource the virus had, making the drive "clean" again and cutting the virus off. But then you just re-opened the door again with a fresh install of Windows. The virus was in sort of a "stand-by" mode lol. Tricky.

I may be a young teenager, but i dont download many things, and im not that stupid, so seriously, i dont have much of a problem.

but still, shhhh keep it down, we dont want hackers comin here an getting the idea do we?
lol
you actually scared me to death. lets just hope no one gets the idea.

I dont know about everyone else in here but it amazes me how many people DO NOT even know what spyware/malware is. I cannot tell you how many times friends have called me complaining about popups, crashes, etc. When I take a look at their computer, its a huge pain to even download adaware or any other anti-spyware program. When the program finally starts scanning and hundreds (once, someone had over 1,000 pieces of spyware) of spyware files appear and I begin to explain to them what it is and how they got it, they are amazed. It is like the average person thinks that it wont happen to them or that everyone on the internet is from pleasantville. All it takes is a little common sense, like mentioned above, to look at a url, make sure site is secure, etc. The scenario that this thread was started about, IMO, is 100% feasible simply because people do not know about it. To further my point, i really do not think the average person knows about windows update, let alone service packs, IE vulnrabilities, programs loaded with 3rd party spyware, etc. Scary stuff.
