Customizable Motherboards.

Wouldn't that be cool? You could choose what and how many PCI/PCI ex. slots you have, how many RAM slots you have, the socket, the heatspreaders, # of SATA ports, w/ or w/o IDE, w/ or w/o Floppy, the list goes on! Why doesn't anyone do this?!

Well, there are a few reasons I can think of as to why it's not done, but I would say that the most prevalent among them would be production cost. Generally, the more you make of something, the less it costs per unit to make. If each motherboard had to be custom designed to the customer's whims, then production costs would skyrocket.

Yeah that would be cool, how about a tripple cpu socket and chove 3 quad cores in there :D

It would be cool if bigger companies like Asus/Gigabyte or MSI would let you order custom boards, I realise they would cost out of the wazoo but you could have a unique board.

i'll take one with 4 1366 slots and 8 16x pci-e slots

not possible, i saw a picture somewhere along the lines of all the traces in just a dual socket, with 1 pcie, and some pci slots, there was almost no room with no traces on it

It would be cool. The price would be crazy, maybe $1,000 a piece maybe. They almost could not give you a warranty, what it was DOA? Then what? They have nothing to replace it with really.

That is a cool thought, all the colors you want, all the RAM slots you want, PCI-E slots like you want....

I was thinking customizable PCBs. Of course, they would be expensive and bad parts would be an issue, but it's like a Mountain Mods case... it's expensive and somewhat oddly shaped, but it does what you want it to and looks like you want it to.

Oh, and with 4 1366 sockets, couldn't you potentially have 32 cores (hyper-threading)?
