Cut a file, wouldn't copy but original was deleted

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro. I have a Lexar SD 256MB mem card. There was some images on it. I knew there was something wrong with the files to begin with because their little previews worked when I selected them in Windows explorer but when I tried to open them Windows Photo Editor gave me an error. Anyway, then I selected them and hit 'cut', but when I went to paste them to my hdd i got an error, "cannot copy ____. The File or directory is corrupted or unreadable". But it seems it had already deleted them from their original location, because when I went back to the mem card, the files are still listed but each is 0 MB.

You would think microsoft would have coded "cut" smarter so it only deletes when the pasting was successfully complete...

Anyone know of any free/cheap recovery software that could get these files back for me?

Thanks.

doesn't matter if u could get htem back, they are corrupted files...(means that the data is damaged so they can't be read) i think

Well, I'd like to get them back and then look into the corruption problem. I'm sure I can do something with them. In the mean time I'd just like to get them back.
