D-Link Router problematic?

Hi,

Here is my story, well after 4 years my old router died (RIP) so I had to buy a new one. I bought this D-LINK DIR600 but some how I am having a lot of trouble with it. Mostly with the WAN thing.

At first I thought it was the ISP company but later I realized when I connect the computer directly to the cable modem, the internet was perfectly fine.

Does anyone have had this problem?

I'd start by making sure that the ethernet cable from the modem is going in to the correct port on the router (usually says Internet/WAN, or is a a different colour)

I'd also try powering both the modem and router off (unplugging power cable), wait about 30 seconds, plug modem back in, wait 30 seconds, plug router in. Then re-test.

If still not working, open the configuration page of the router. Check out the status page (or whatever page on your routers config settings that shows you the WAN ip) and see if you are getting a WAN ip address (ie NOT the ones that would start with 192.168.x.x). Sometimes you will have the option to 'renew' the ip or something like that.

If you find that you DO have a valid looking WAN IP, then check the IP configuration on the computers that are connected to the router to see if they are getting a local IP. (192.168.x.x). If they ARE, then the next step would be to check the DNS configuration.

Faling all of this, you very well may have a defective router.

I had no problem connecting it. In fact, now it is working. However, sometimes it stops receiving the signal from the cable modem. I reset it and often that restores everything. It is very annoying doing this everytime.

This is typical behavior of a defective router. Works fine, stops, you power cycle it and its good for a while. I think you got a dud.

Return it. D-Link routers have gone sub-par these days. I went through two DIR-655's over the course of two years. I've since switched to ASUS and run an ASUS RT-N56U at home, in my dorm at school, and also at work.
