D:\ Not Accessible

I've been trying to fix up an old computer, It's Windows 98 right now. Every time I try to insert a CD, It doesn't autorun, When i go under Run and try to access the D Drive from there i get a message saying "D:\ Not accessible folder was moved or removed." I've never moved or removed the D Drive folder, but i can't remedy the problem because all of my remedies need a CD-ROM! I would be grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.

try turning on autorun or see if there is a firmware upgrade, happens to my burner and it fixed after upgrade.

there are a few things that you can do depending on if the system itself is recongnizing the drive itself, if it isn't recognizing it the drive could be bad, try taking out the power and the ide cable and putting them back in sometimes that helps, resetting the bios sometimes helps, or if there are two drives on that computer make sure that there are not two slaves or two masters make sure it's setup as a master and a slave.

1. When you open My Computer, what do you see?
2. Also check that the IDE cable hasnt slipped out or something :)

Sounds like your CD drive is defective.
Try this - insert a known good CD, remember the exact position of the CD when you placed it in the drive bay. Check if the CD Drive light goes on (CD Drive trying to read the CD). Open the CD Drive, is the CD in the same position as you have placed it (has not rotated)? If it is, then your CD Drive is defective.

If the position has changed, then go to windows, system, iosubsys folder, find the file scsi1hlp.vxd, rename it to scsi1hlp.vxdbak then reboot the computer. See if this can correct the problem.

that only proves if the CD spins.. but it doesnt tell you anything about the laser,. wich does the reading ;)

If the CD does not spin then the laser is useless even if it is working. Further - the life of the motor is shorter than the laser.
