Damn partitioning crap!!!!!

P.I Dragon
I use Partition Magic 8 Pro to do all of my partitions, recently got my new 120Gb drive, i changed my "MyDocuments" folder to that drive to save space on my 80Gb. I recently got the latest BETA of vista from MSDN and was planning to install it ona seperate partition on my 120Gb, so i goes into PM8Pro new paertition, blah blah.... Executing actions,..... ERROR cannot continue, so im like... OK, whatever, but the i go into MY Computer and see that its got rid of ALL of my data and transformed my 120Gb drive into a single partition that is only 15Gb (the size specified for the new partition).

WTF, so im like, ok, go back into PM8Pro and redistribute free space. Done that fine, but now i have an empty drive..... WTF, that had my WHOLE music collection on it, and every photoshop image ive ever done, along with countless gigs of school coursework for my upcoming AS exams, the folder with backup archives to all of the sites that i run was on there. I'm seriously screwed BIGTIME

Ive got PCInspector File Recovery scanning the drive now, 45 mins remainnig. What do you guys think the chances of getting even a fraction of that stuff back is....??

I really need it back, dragon2309.

Tip: Dont use partition magic...ever! That exact same thing happened to me. I lost 20GB of music, all of which i had to rip form cd again. It had my BTEC National Diploma coursework in, although i ended up dropping out, so wasnt too harsh.

I never thought of using a recover program, i was too pissed. I really hope you get your stuff back becaus ei know how frustrating it is too lose it all. And aslong as the data wasnt written over, which i dont think it will, be, you should be able to get most of your stuff back.

Well, theres 10 minutes left on PCinspector file recovery, it says that its found 2500 deleted files, i know for a fact there was more than that on the drive to start with so..... we'll see.

the music isnt so bad, mot of it is on my MP3 player aswell, but the AS coursework and all of my photoshop renders is what im most worried about....

Thanks for the reply, just listening to my ranting and raving i suppose.... And no, i havent written over any of it, i restarted the comp but the 120Gb is a slave, i boot from the master 80Gb one, so that shouldnt have done anything should it...?

I've used Paragon Partition Manager time and time again without any problems. I don't know whether it's just an issue with that program or not.

Good luck getting your files back m8. :)

Yeh, thats what threw me when it came up with an error, ive used it hndreds of times before with not one error.

I almost had a heart attack just now, i have a physics exam on tuesday and the thought that you needed coursework for it just flashed up in my head, but then i remebered its the exams in June that you need the coursework for, not Janurary..... *phew*

Hmm

Truly, I am not too confident about the recovery being successful. I use Partition Expert 2003 and I think it's excellent. I would try it if I were you next time you go into these endeavors. I used to use PM, but it caused several problems and would not work for me most of the time giving me all these errors and so on.

Weird how the same software can corrupt one person's setup and be totally fine for another's...

Ah, that was a waste of time, they are all just .tmp files, with random numbers as their file names...... WTF

Antone got any other suggestuions on programs or anything, ive just lost the will to live. :(

Hmm

Dragon, did you back up anything? I know that it may sound bad coming from me who does not backup, but these things have to be expected and we should be prepared to deal with the consequences. I would probably jump off a bridge if I were to find myself in your shoes right now.

No, i didnmt backup up anything except the coursework, thats on my pendrive, but its a real early version of the work, it hasnt been updated in a good few weeks and boy have i done a lot to it since then.... If i were to pay for professional data recovery, would i get all data back...???

dragon2309

*EDIT* - and the bridge is looking mighty tempting at the moment.....

You might do, but although I don't know the exact price range I'm sure you would be looking at a lot of money. Many companies recover what they can before giving you a quote of what they want for the recovered data.

It all depends whether you feel money is no object or whether you feel you can recreate your coursework from memory.

I had a look around, far too expensive for me. And seeing as ive got older versions on my pen drive, ill just start working on those again. Its still a real inconvenience though.... damn PM8Pro

I walways just do direct transfers onto a backup, then partion format however i feel then dirct tranfer back....The only way im sucesfull all the time.
