Hello, [my first post]

I am fixing a laptop for someone, and their hard drive seems to have gotten a virus of some sort. I plugged it up to my via sata card, and i can browse the folders all up until it gets to the user folders. They just dont want to load. I am supposed to be backing up some pictures for the young lady, but cant even get to them. This is my first job working with backing up data, especially potentially corrupted data.

My question/reason for posting here is because i do not know of any freeware programs that are good for obtaining corrupted data off a hard drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Their user files are protected cause you aren't the user. You need to take ownership of that folder/files. Read here.

This is for XP. If you have vista or W7 then just google search "how to take ownership of folders in xxx" where xxx is your operating system.
 
Also you need to make sure u do a good virus scan on that hard drive to make sure u do not inffect your system... The do as john said. Take owner-ship and only move the photo and music files that are legit not downloaded from progams like limewire and such.. many of them are virus'...
